Ford Visual Identification
351M & 400 crankshaft
By looking at the hole in the crank pin and compare it to
the location it is to the main and the radius seam,
you can see the difference in a 351M and 400.
400 Casting numbers:
5M, 5MA, 5MAB, 5MABC
 
351M/400 & 351 Cleveland
Compare the water outlet on the 2 engines with the location with the distributor hole.
The 400 has a rib on the driver side of the block.
On the 400, the water sending unit is located below the "water tube", the 351C has the hole located above the "water tube"
You can also visually see the difference in the width of the 2 engines.
